Understanding the Process Domain

The Process domain is the largest domain on the PMP exam at 50% — approximately 90 out of 180 questions. It covers the technical aspects of managing a project across both predictive (waterfall) and adaptive (agile) methodologies.

Key Task Areas

  • Execute project with urgency — Assess opportunities to deliver value incrementally, examine the business value throughout the project
  • Manage communications — Analyze communication needs, determine methods, and ensure effectiveness
  • Assess and manage risks — Determine risk management options, iteratively assess and prioritize risks
  • Engage stakeholders — Analyze stakeholders, categorize engagement, and develop engagement strategies
  • Plan and manage budget and resources — Estimate budgetary needs, anticipate changes, and monitor budget variations
  • Plan and manage schedule — Estimate project tasks, use benchmarks and historical data, prepare the schedule

Critical Path Method

The critical path is the longest path through the project network and determines the minimum project duration. Key concepts:

  • Float/Slack = LS - ES = LF - EF (zero float = critical path)
