PMP Exam Day Guide — Process Domain Focus
What to expect and how to handle Process domain questions on PMP exam day. Formula quick reference, methodology tips, and timing advice.
Exam Day: Process Domain
Process Domain on Exam Day
The Process domain is 50% of the exam (~90 questions). You'll encounter a mix of:
- Scenario questions about methodology selection
- Calculation questions (EVM, PERT, critical path)
- Change management process questions
- Risk response selection questions
- Agile/Scrum ceremony and artifact questions
Quick Formula Reference
Write these on your scratch paper as soon as the exam starts:
- EVM: CV = EV-AC, SV = EV-PV, CPI = EV/AC, SPI = EV/PV, EAC = BAC/CPI
- PERT: (O + 4M + P) / 6
- Standard Deviation: (P - O) / 6
- Float: LS - ES = LF - EF
- Communication Channels: n(n-1) / 2
- EMV: Probability × Impact
Process Question Decision Tree
- Is a change requested? → Follow change control process
- Is there a risk? → Identify, analyze, plan response, implement, monitor
- Is there a quality issue? → Root cause analysis → corrective action
- Is there a schedule delay? → Check critical path → fast track or crash
- Is there a cost overrun? → Review EVM → update estimates → change request
Agile vs. Predictive on Exam Day
Read the scenario context carefully:
- "Iterative," "sprint," "backlog," "product owner" → Agile context
- "WBS," "change control board," "baseline," "project management plan" → Predictive context
- "Hybrid" — Look for the approach that fits the described situation
Time Management Tip
If you hit a calculation question and don't immediately know how to solve it, flag it and move on. Come back to it after your break. Calculation questions take longer but aren't worth more than other questions.
