Servant Leadership on the PMP
The PMP exam heavily emphasizes servant leadership — a leadership philosophy where the leader's primary goal is to serve the team. A servant leader focuses on removing impediments, supporting team development, and ensuring team members have what they need to succeed.
Key servant leadership behaviors include:
- Listening actively and empathetically
- Removing obstacles and shielding the team from distractions
- Building community and trust within the team
- Sharing power and putting others' needs first
- Promoting team self-organization and autonomy
Conflict Management Approaches
The PMP exam tests five conflict resolution techniques, based on the Thomas-Kilmann model:
- Collaborate/Problem-Solve — Win-win approach; best for complex issues with time to resolve (the PMI-preferred approach)
- Compromise/Reconcile — Each party gives something up; useful when both parties have equal power
- Withdraw/Avoid — Temporarily stepping back from the conflict; appropriate for cooling-off periods
- Smooth/Accommodate — Emphasizing agreement over differences; useful for maintaining relationships
- Force/Direct — One party wins at the other's expense; appropriate only in emergencies
Motivation Theories
Expect PMP questions referencing these motivation frameworks:
- Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs — Physiological → Safety → Social → Esteem → Self-actualization
- Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory — Hygiene factors (prevent dissatisfaction) vs. motivators (drive satisfaction)
- McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y — Authoritarian vs. participative management assumptions
- McClelland's Achievement Theory — Needs for achievement, affiliation, and power
- Vroom's Expectancy Theory — Motivation = Expectancy × Instrumentality × Valence
