Scrum Framework for the PMP Exam

Complete guide to Scrum roles, events, and artifacts as tested on the PMP exam.

Scrum Framework

Scrum is the most widely used agile framework and is heavily tested on the PMP exam. It uses fixed-length iterations called sprints to deliver increments of value.

Scrum Team

  • Product Owner — Maximizes the value of the product; owns and prioritizes the product backlog. One person, not a committee.
  • Scrum Master — Serves the team as a servant leader. Removes impediments, coaches on Scrum practices, facilitates events.
  • Developers — Cross-functional, self-organizing team that creates the increment. Typically 3-9 people.

Scrum Events

  • Sprint — Time-boxed iteration (1-4 weeks). No changes that endanger the sprint goal. Can be cancelled only by the Product Owner.
  • Sprint Planning — Team selects backlog items and creates a plan. Answers: What can be done? How?
  • Daily Scrum — 15-minute standup. What did I do? What will I do? What impediments?
  • Sprint Review — Inspect the increment and adapt the product backlog. Stakeholders attend.
  • Sprint Retrospective — Inspect the process and create improvement actions. Team only.

Scrum Artifacts & Commitments

  • Product Backlog → Commitment: Product Goal
  • Sprint Backlog → Commitment: Sprint Goal
