In agile contexts, scope validation happens at the end of each sprint during the sprint review, where the product owner accepts or rejects the increment.

Control Scope: Preventing Unauthorized Changes

Control Scope is the process of monitoring the status of the project scope and managing changes to the scope baseline. Its primary purpose is ensuring that only approved changes are implemented and that scope creep — uncontrolled expansion of scope without corresponding adjustments to time, cost, and resources — is prevented.

Key characteristics of Control Scope include internal focus — the process is managed by the project team and project manager rather than external stakeholders. It is change-oriented — the question it answers is "Is the scope baseline being followed, and are changes being managed properly?" It produces work performance information about scope status — how the current scope compares to the baseline. And it produces change requests for scope modifications that need formal approval and scope baseline updates when approved changes modify the baseline.

Control Scope is ongoing throughout the project. It runs continuously whenever the project is active, monitoring for unauthorized scope changes, evaluating change requests, and maintaining the integrity of the scope baseline.

Understanding these differences helps you identify which process a PMP question is testing.

  • Who is involved: Validate Scope involves the customer or sponsor reviewing deliverables. Control Scope involves the project manager and team monitoring scope status and managing changes.
